August Games with Gold offers up Ground Zeroes and more

Just in time for the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on September 1st, Xbox One gamers can play the prolog that is Ground Zeroes for free this month.

Ground Zeroes, which saw release not all that long ago, was a pretty great little taste of what Konami has in store for Metal Gear Solid fans with the upcoming Phantom Pain. Although the game was super short, it was a lot of fun, and definitely whetted the appetite for what will be the final title to emerge from director Hideo Kojima’s mind as goes the MGS franchise.

If the shortness put you off originally, then this is your month, as you’ll get to download and play the game for free via Xbox Live’s Games with Gold program all month long. Personally, I paid the $19.99 USD for it at launch and I loved it, so to get it for free is kind of a no-brainer ‘purchase’. Clearly the headliner for August’s freebies, Ground Zeroes isn’t the only game that’ll be worth your time this month.

The entire Metro saga is also free to download and play (as long as you’re an Xbox Live Gold subscriber) on the Xbox 360, which is pretty awesome to be perfectly honest. Both of those titles (2033 and Last Light) are tremendously cool FPS’, and are well worth an action fans time. It should also be noted here though, that these aren’t the ‘HD’ versions of the games that saw launch as a part of that duo pack that was released this year for the One and PS4, these are the original versions of both. Not that that should really put you off at all.

Just keep in mind that Metro 2033 is more of a survival shooter, while Last Light is way more of a pure action affair and you’ll be good to go. For the dates on these, 2033 will be available the 1st through the 15th, while Last Light will go free starting on the 16th, running through the 31st.

Also worth a mention is that zombie/survival title How to Survive on the Xbox One, whose Storm Warning Edition goes free, will be available starting on the 16th of this month through September 15th.
