Sony announces end of discs, closing PS3/Vita stores

It’s been a big day for Sony, with digital store closures and some big plans for the future. Does that mean the end of the disc-based game?

For the players?

What a few weeks it’s been for Sony and the PlayStation brand. Events started not that long ago, with a mass delisting, which found over 500 movies removed from the PlayStation store. More than just losing the option to buy films like Terminator 2 though, the happening actually saw affected films pulled out of consumers’ accounts.

Yes, even though fans paid for them, they still lost access to them. Worse yet, there were no refunds issued, leaving people high and dry. To make a long story short, the delisting was due to a loss of rights for TV shows and movies from StudioCanal. Not great, to say the least, but it was just the tip of the iceberg for what would be coming soon thereafter.

Just this morning, Sony released a statement via X, which went over a double-headed beast of a reveal.

No more physical discs

Way back in 2009, Sony released the PSP Go console. The little portable featured a great-looking form-factor that slid open, and a small footprint that was perfect for playing on the go. There was one big drawback though, and it was something that players just weren’t ready for. That being that it was digital only.

Since that time though, digital gaming has surged. Downloading games has overtaken physical retail to a great degree, to such a level that Rockstar recently announced that GTA6 would be going all-digital. But even so, physical sure as heck isn’t dead.

Just the opposite actually, as boxed versions of blockbusters still fairly regularly sell out at stores. That happened in 2024, with the XBOX edition of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and social media voicers are reporting that it’s happening in some areas right now too, with Nintendo’s Star Fox. So while physical gaming is flagging a bit, it’s not gone. Yet.

Today Sony took a massive shot at it though, revealing that the future of PlayStation will be all digital. We’re potentially not talking about the oncoming PS6 only either, as the cease of disc production wasn’t made via generation, but a calendar date.

An all-digital future

According to the company’s statement, that above date we mentioned will be January of 2028. To clarify what that that means exactly, it’s that from that month on, no new games seeing publication will be pressed onto discs. The format will be sunsetted, and games on PlayStation platforms will become digital only.

Sony adds that, aside from availability on the PlayStation Store, titles will still ship to other shops. It’s just that they’ll be in digital format. We’re guessing that means more of those little cards you see hanging in game aisles even today, in shops like GameStop and Target. Well, those and maybe some empty boxes too, a’la Grand Theft Auto.

So what’s the reasoning for this? And why talk about it now, when there isn’t even a PS6 to reveal? For its part, Sony says it’s to “adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs”. We can only assume that statement is in reference to the current-gen PS5 as well as possible future consoles.

Physical and digital formats have been coexisting for years. The choice between the two has been up to the buyer. And it’s easy to see the pros and cons of both directions. Some fans prefer the ease of digital, while others like having a physical library to look at, and also the feeling of actually ‘owning’ their media. Given the above move with StudioCanal’s offerings, this writer definitely sees that specific point.

But hang on, because we’re not done.

All this and a pair of store closures too

As mentioned above, word of the end of the physical format wasn’t all that Sony dropped today. Right along with that dreaded information, was news that a pair of legacy digital storefronts would be closing. I’m left wondering is there was no way that this all could’ve been better timed, but apparently not.

Whatever happened behind the scenes, the result is that both the PS3 and PS Vita stores will be shuttered. As for when, strap in, because it will begin… next month. That’s right, certain markets will see the PS3 store close up starting in August of 2026.

According to Sony, those markets will be Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. “Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries” will be the next up to lose access, which’ll be later this year. As for the rest of the world, there’ll be about a year’s reprieve, which will see the PS3 marketplace shut its doors in July of 2027. And as for the Vita’s store, that looks like a global closure happening in that same July ’27 window.
