No, your eyes do not deceive you, Shrek 5 is finally happening. The big guy, Donkey and more are heading to theaters next summer.
Shrek and Donkey, together again
It’s been a while, hasn’t it? And wow, do we mean “a while”, since the Universal Pictures’ Shrek last hit theaters. Granted, since then, Puss in Boots had his own starring roles, but those were spinoffs. And it’s been 16 years since fans have gotten to see Shrek, Donkey, and whole fairy tale crew together. That drought ends in 2027 though, as Shrek 5 careens into theaters for a June 30th release.
Naturally, that film will see Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz back again as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. There’s a bigger family this time though, with Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter Felicia. Hang on though, because we mean a much bigger family. Actors Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo will also be onboard as Felicia’s bro’s, Fergus and Farkle.
Shrek 5 will be directed by franchise vets Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, as well as Brad Ableson. Serving as producers will be Gina Shay, who’s also no stranger to the title ogre, and Chris Meledandri. You might know that last name as being the CEO of Illumination.
As for the tale it’ll tell, well, it looks like Shrek and the fam will be heading to the big city. Just don’t expect the visit to go smoothly for them. Not that you would.
Just one note on the release date here too, since you might see on the header image that the launch is this December. That’s apparently not the case though, as the press release and YouTube page both list that June 30th, 2027 date. So it’ll be a summertime Og-venture and not Santa Shrek for Shrek 5.
