Apple dominates with reported $10 billion spent in the App Store in 2013

2013 was a very big year indeed for the Apple App Store, and December was far and away the biggest month.

2013 was the biggest year on record for the App Store since its debut in 2008 according to Apple. That’s not hard to believe with a recorded take of some 10 billion dollars- that’s billion. With a ‘B’.

The App Store has taken off in ways that I don’t think a whole lot of people thought it would. The digital download platform is now not only the source for applications for work and lifestyle for iPhone and iPad users, but it’s also a gaming destination for what’s fast becoming (if it isn’t already) one of the biggest and most dominant gaming platforms in the market today. In fact, Apple itself singled out many of the games that feature on the store as some of the reasons for the huge numbers in 2013; numbers that got even huge-r in December.

The biggest month ever for the platform tallied a cool 1 billion in sales in just the Holiday month alone last year. That’s just this side of beastly and only going to go up thanks to the popularity of the games on iOS and the recent spate of controllers that have been announced and are hitting the market right now for the line of touchscreen devices.

For Apple and its iPhone/iPad empire, the sky certainly looks like it might be limit in 2014. Then again, knowing Apple and its rabid fan base, they’ll probably find a way to go even higher.
