Spaceballs sequel gets an official title, plus a cast list

Forget any title that you might’ve heard (oh, about four decades ago), as Spaceballs: The New One is officially coming to theaters.

Spaceballs? There goes the planet

There’s no denying what a hit the original Spaceballs was. While the movie wasn’t a monster smash during its original theatrical run, the sci-fi spoof from Mel Brooks has since become a cultural touchstone. And as promised in the 1987 classic, there will be a sequel.

While the title of that flick-to-be was actually revealed in the classic film as “Spaceballs: The Search for More Money” though, it’s getting a retcon. The official new title has been revealed today at CinemaCon, and it’s… Spaceballs: The New One.

Just like the old one, but newer.

Normally, we’d have a bit of a description to give you here, to go along with the video above. Thing is though, there isn’t anything to report just yet. According to Amazon MGM Studios, plot details “are being kept under lock, key, and an industrial-strength Schwartz shield.”

Frankly, we’re not likely to get through that, so we’ll just have to wait.

The Schwartz awakens

So as to when there might be more information on that plot forthcoming, we’re not sure. Be that as it may though, there is some more general information about the movie to share today. For one thing, there’s the cast, which should look pretty darn familiar to fans of the classic.

Rick Moranis, George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and Mel Brooks will all be returning. Being that Moranis was retired for decades too, it’s pretty neat to see him coming back as villain Dark Helmet. Those stars won’t be alone though, as a host of newcomers will be included as well. That list includes Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan. Expect them to be playing brand new characters.

Josh Greenbaum has been setup to direct The New One, and the film hails from writers Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit. It’s also packing a mighty list of producers, with Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody in with that lot. They’re joined by Angry Child Productions’ aforementioned Gad, plus Greenbaum and Kevin Salter. Oh, and of course, Brooksfilms Limited’s Mel Brooks is there too. Can’t forget him. While we’re at it, we might as well mention Adam Merims, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez are all onboard too, as executive producers. And that’s just about all the info… actually, wait a second, there’s also a release date.

Get ready for space-wackiness, as Spaceballs: The New One arrives in theaters in about a year’s time, on April 23rd, 2027.
