Giant-Sized Captain America tribute coming up for 80th

With eight decades in the bag, Marvel’s Captain America is still going strong. A special talent-packed tribute issue is in the works for 2021.

Sentinel of liberty

The year was 1941, and creators Jack Kirby and Joe Simon had something big in store. The pair were about to introduce the world to a character that would go on to be one of the most perennially-popular superheroes of all time. Of course, that would be Captain America.

Captain Steve Rodgers would go on from there to be a household name, starring in some of Marvel’s biggest events. Not only that, but as of late he was one of the lynchpins in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well. It might be arguable, but as a character he might be more popular now than ever.

So with the 80th anniversary of the hero coming up in 2021, the publisher has a special issue planned. Titled “Captain America Anniversary Tribute #1”, the one-shot will feature a cavalcade of comic book stars.

Check out the roster of talent:

A retelling of history

As for the story, there are several (as you might imagine). Marvel says that classic Cap tales will be included and modernized for a new generation. In the issue you’ll see Cap’s first appearance, including his origin. From there, his first battle with Red Skull will play out, all the way up to his re-emergence from the ice of the arctic.

CAPTAIN AMERICA TRIBUTE #1 will feature a cadre of Marvel’s best artists redrawing and modernizing Captain America’s first appearance, CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS #1, as well as his genre-defining reintroduction to the Marvel Universe, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s AVENGERS #4. See the Star-Spangled Avenger’s extraordinary origin, his first battle against the Red Skull, and his Silver Age debut where he emerges from suspended animation to live on as a Star-Spangled Avenger like never before as your favorite artists reimagine these classic tales for a new age. These definitive comic book stories will be presented in an all-new way in a star-studded special that will delight long-time True Believers and the current generation of Marvel fans!
