A fighting series at a crossroads? Whatever you want to call it, Virtua Fighter Crossroads looks unique and fresh.
Welcome back, Virtua Fighter
Teased for a while now, Sega’s premier fighting game series finally has a deeper look at its action. That game would be Virtua Fighter Crossroads, which got a much more detailed look last Friday. If you haven’t see the first trailer for the game yet, hang on, because it’s likely not what you were expecting.
The series has always been all about one on one fighting, in a traditional fighting game format. The main difference between it and other properties is that Virtua Fighter tried to maintain a more realistic style. And in that way, it looks like Virtua Fighter Crossroads will be right in line with what’s come before.
So how is it different? Well, along with a versus mode, which will be included, it’ll also have… something else. And that “something else” looks a heck of a lot like a main mode that combines the action and fighting genres. Actually, that’s exactly what it is, starring a quartet of all-new characters that players will take control of.
In the trailer featuring new fighter Cielo, fans got just a taste of the cinematic narrative and intense action that will define RGG Studio’s foray into this unconventional new approach to the fighting game genre, all while retaining the series’ core legacy of pure, realistic combat with simple controls that made it a pillar of the industry. This distinct mode will live alongside a robust Versus mode experience, featuring a full suite of local and online modes.
Sega press release
Different, but still looking sharp
So yeah, Virtua Fighter Crossroads is looking like the most unique entry in the series to date. Actually, from the looks of it, it might be one of the most unique entries in any fighting game series. A tremendous amount of work was put into the story behind its main play mode, which is something that you don’t see that often. Even the most story-intensive fighting games aren’t all that deep after all. But that definitely doesn’t seem to be the case with Sega’s latest.
As you might imagine, that kind of focus could mean that there are some big name creatives behind it. That’s just the case too, with David Hayter (yes, that David Hayter), Brad Kane, Tsuyoshi Furuta, and Shinji Yamamoto all onboard.
To give players a deeper look at what that team and others have crafted, Sega also released a special Showcase video. In it, you’ll get a much better sense of how Virtua Fighter Crossroads‘ works, and also the first look at its fighting “versus” mode.
Check that out below, then get ready, as Virtua Fighter Crossroads is set to arrive some time in 2027. If you’d like to take a peek at the official site, you can do so here.
