SDCC ’26: The Schwartz is strong with Spaceballs: The New One

A sci-fi (comedy) epic 40 years in the making will be at Comic Con. Spaceballs: The New One is heading to Hall H.

Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned

The legendary comedy/spoof that is Spaceballs is on the way back to theaters. Written by Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit, and directed by Josh Greenbaum, Spaceballs: The New One is scheduled to hit theaters on April 23rd, 2027. That puts the sequel’s launch almost 40 years to the day from the original’s.

When it arrives, it’ll be with the original cast in tow, plus a few new faces. Rick Moranis is coming out of retirement for the film, and he’ll be joined by Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, Anthony Carrigan, George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and… Mel Brooks. What would it be without him?

Somehow, Dark Helmet has returned! Forty years after the events of the first Spaceballs, fifty years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and one year after the events of The Devil Wears Prada 2, the galaxy is once again under threat. A threat so evil, so unstoppable, so completely lacking in any original ideas, that it has vowed to bring back the past… every last bit of it.

With Lone Starr in hiding, Queen Vespa on the throne, and the Schwartz stretched thinner than a franchise releasing TV episodes theatrically, the only hope for the galaxy is Vespa’s undisciplined son, Prince Starburst, and a mysterious Palace advisor named Destiny. Together, they must find Lone Starr, Yogurt, and any other iconic legacy characters fans are demanding before they discover the hard way that, while some threats you can fight, the reboot is not one of them.

Amazon MGM Studios press release

Spaceballs? There goes the Comic Con

Yes, Spaceballs: The New One is still a year out. But all the same, eager fans who are attending next week’s SDCC will be able to check out a special panel presentation. The details on that event are still somewhat under wraps, but it sounds like it might be quite the happening.

That’s because, according to the press release, the “cast and filmmakers” will be on hand for it. Might that mean that a good number of Spaceballs stars could be in attendance? It certainly sounds like it, and we’ve got our fingers crossed.

Fans in attendance can look for the Spaceballs panel to kick off in Hall H on Friday, July 24th, at 4:00pm.
