If you missed it, Capcom has updated the release date for this fall’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword. And yes, it’s set to land even sooner.
Onimusha now arrives in early September
September 2026 is shaping up to be one heck of a release month, and that might be putting it mildly. Fans will have a monster slate of games vying for their attention as early as possible. That’s understandable, as publishers want to get their stuff out there before November’s juggernaut.
Right there at the fore of the fall’s big launch season too, is Capcom’s Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The action sequel has been a long (long) time coming, and is looking great. That’s left fans champing at the bit to dig in. And as it happens, that’s something that they’ll be able to do a little earlier.
Capcom has announced that potential players can look for Onimusha: Way of the Sword to hit consoles and the PC a few weeks ahead of schedule. This won’t be tied to a specific version either, with the new date covering all editions of the game.
As of now, the standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe editions will arrive on September 4th, 2026.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the latest installment in Capcom’s classic Onimusha series. The first entry in 20 years, the all-new action game returns to a dark fantasy Japan where samurai clash with the supernatural. The story fuses history and myth, following the journey of Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai armed with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, as he battles demons invading Edo-period Kyoto. Onimusha: Way of the Sword features intense action that combines the series’ signature Issen and Soul Absorption mechanics with exhilarating swordplay that takes combat to new heights.

Don’t forget the demo
If you just can’t wait to dive into Onimusha: Way of the Sword, then you’ve actually got an option right now. And while it won’t give you a ton of the game to try out, it’ll at least let you get a taste for the action. Yes, that’d be the demo.
We can’t say it’s all that lengthy of a play-through, but the demo definitely does serve up a solid taste of the final game. Included are plenty of fiends to hack ‘n’ slash, as well as a boss fight. And we’ll add that the demo-capper is an interesting battle indeed. No spoilers, but it’s not what we expected it to be. On top of that, it might present some interesting story-developments for the full game.
In any event, that demo is live right now, and actually stocks a bonus as well. Those who download and play, will find themselves with a Kubi Akari charm, as a special bonus in the full release. All you have to do is keep your save data from the demo, and you should be good to go when you pick up the full version of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
Speaking of, the full version of the game its heading to the PS5, Switch 2, XBOX Series X|S, and the PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. Unfortunately, the demo isn’t available for all of those platforms. But if you have a PS5, XBOX Series X|S, or a PC with either Steam or Epic, you’re good to go.
