GTA 6 priced, physical version won’t include a disc

Some long-awaited news erupted out of Rockstar Games today, as we got both the price and some surprising news about Grand Theft Auto VI.

Grand Theft Auto gets its price

This might seem like kind of an odd story to report on, given the topic. After all, the prices of video games aren’t all that notable, and players in the modern era all but expect some bigger name titles to run higher than they have in years. But hang on, because this GTA we’re talking about.

And if you haven’t been paying attention, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI has been under a microscope as goes its price tag. While some online have been more conservative as to guesses, there’ve been many who assumed that the publisher would be raising it above norms, big time. The reasoning for that, at least as we understand it, is twofold.

First, it’s the sixth (numbered) GTA. For that alone, there’s a massive hype machine surrounding it that few other titles can match. Fans are rabid to see a new game in the set after the drought that 13 years of GTA5 provided. And you can add to that the fact that it’s set in the fan-favorite Vice City, which is only ramping that fervor up.

Then though, there’s also the fact that this upcoming offering is looking like the most expensive game ever made. We haven’t seen anything official on that end, but from the word of mouth, GTA6 has cost a stratospheric amount of money to produce. We’re talking somewhere between one and two billion dollars.

That’s… a lot, and would certainly explain a higher retail price than your typical game, with some predicting a base-level price tag of $100 USD. But hang on, because news has come across today, that officially shatters that narrative.

Well… maybe not “shatters”. Maybe more like ‘lightly cracks’.

More than standard, but not stratospheric

So, first, GTA6 is going to feature a higher price. There’s no getting around that one, though it’s also going to fall short of the aforementioned guesses of $100 USD. How much less? Well, Grand Theft Auto VI will be clocking in at $79.99 USD, when it launches for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S this November.

While that’s a lot, keep in mind that premium (standard edition) releases to date have usually run around $69.99 USD. With that, you’re only talking about a $10 increase, and $20 over what’s become a semi-standard. Even so though, that’s not to say that we love it.

Eighty bucks for a base copy of a game, no matter how big, is disappointing to see. And we don’t think that there’s much of an argument to make, in saying that it won’t cut some players out of the conversation. That’s just a lot to justify for no bonuses. Or for that matter, a disc.

Something that wasn’t rumored at all, was that the physical edition of GTA6 wouldn’t ship with a disc. Unfortunately though, that’ll apparently be the case, as website GamesIndustry is reporting that the boxed version of the title will include a download code only.

We’ve seen this a few times over the years, but never with such a monster of a release. If you’re a physical game fan who likes to build out his or her IRL library though, you appear to have no choice but to go digital in respects to one of the biggest launches of this generation.

Launching this fall

If you are in for Grand Theft Auto VI, then you might want to know that pre-orders start tomorrow, on June 25th, 2026. In addition to the base version too, there’ll also be an Ultimate Edition. The difference being that the UE will include some in-game extras, for a cost of $99.99 USD.

On top of that, it should also be noted that pre-ordering does have some advantages. Yes, even in respects to a digital game. Those who secure their copy before launch, will be in for the “Vintage Vice City” pack, as well as a free month of GTA+.

What’s included in that downloadable content pack? On the vehicular side, that’ll nab you a ’55 Vapid Stanier sedan, plus a garage “alongside Ocean Beach”. That’s not all though, as both Jason and Lucia will find themselves with some classic duds and dos to complete a the ’80s look, along with what looks to be weapon skins that reflect the iconic button-down worn by one Tommy Vercetti.
