Arizona Sunshine breaking out of VR on consoles and PC

Formerly bound to headsets, co-op shooter Arizona Sunshine will be bringing its brand of zombie slaying to a larger audience this year.

Rotters in the Arizona Sunshine

Originally debuting way back in 2016, Arizona Sunshine served up a world that was overrun with the undead. The original spun out into a full trilogy eventually, though none of those ever appeared outside of virtual reality. As with another recent title though, that status is about to change.

Revealed late last week by Vertigo Games, the original Arizona Sunshine is about to get a remake. And yes, it’ll also be busting loose of headsets, and onto consoles and the PC. From the sound of it, there are some big changes in store for this revision too.

For one thing, there’s the couch co-op. While the game will include solo play, Arizona Sunshine will be playable in split screen for the first time. On top of that, fans will also be able to pull the camera back, and set play to third-person perspective. Most interesting out of all of this though? We’ve got to imagine that’s Buddy.

Buddy is the canine companion of main character Sunny, and in this new version of the game, he’s playable. Yes, playable, as in you can play as the dog. According to Vertigo Games, that means turning into a “furry missile capable of sniffing out secrets and tearing Freds limb from limb”.

Oh, yeah, if you’re wondering what a Fred is, it’s what Sunny calls the undead. Maybe he’s gotten too much… sun.

It’s hot, it’s bloody and frankly, you smell terrible. Meet Sunny, a dark-humored survivor who has spent way too much time alone in the desert talking to the undead he calls “Fred.” Together with his fiercely loyal, zombie-chomping dog Buddy, he sets out on a sun-drenched, gore-splattered road trip across Arizona. It’s a witty, frantic story about survival, loneliness, and the bond between a man and his dog.

Vertigo Games press release

Arizona Sunshine is set to dawn on the PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Fans itching for a trip into the sun-bleached apocalypse can get ready for it sooner than later too, as the title will be landing some time before the end of the year.
