Check out the gameplay of Metro 2039, coming early 2027

The next chapter in the Metro saga is almost here with Metro 2039. Get the first look at gameplay, as well as its dark new storyline.

Catching the Metro

Arguably one of the best-held first-person shooter series’ in the modern catalog, Metro offers an adaptation of writer Dmitry Glukhovsky’s books. And if you’re unfamiliar with those, the Metro series delves into the aftermath of a nuclear apocalypse, but not how you might imagine. The series is centered in Russia, instead of the usually-seen US, and takes place in the (relative) safety of the underground. And of course, those post-apocalyptic tales didn’t stop at just Glukhovsky’s writings.

Crafted by 4A Games, there’ve been so-far a pretty well-received set of video games to adapt that original universe. That began with Metro 2033, before flowing into both Last Light and Exodus. A virtual reality game even saw release just a few years ago, with Metro Awakening. But if you thought the saga was over, well, hang on.

There’s a return to the post-apocalyptic subway tunnels of Moscow coming up, and not too far into the future. But even though the setting is familiar, it sounds like the status quo has changed. To that end, the protectors of the realm called the Spartans are now under the leadership of a tyrannical despot called Hunter.

Standing in his way? That’d be The Stranger. Yep, players will take control of a new main character for Metro 2039, as they look to end Hunter’s reign for good.

The Metro has been transformed by a powerful new regime and its leader, the fanatical Spartan leader known as Hunter. METRO 2039’s protagonist, The Stranger, is consumed with anger and hatred, chastising the Fuhrer for his lies and hypocrisy. As part of the Spartan Order, Hunter was a legend, a high-ranking, experienced Ranger, who swore to protect the Metro. What’s left of the Spartan Order as he knew it lies in ruins, and where the Spartans were once considered selfless protectors, the Stranger believes Hunter has become the very enemy the Spartans used to fight…

Deep Silver press release

As mentioned, Metro 2039 isn’t all that far off, and players will be able to dig in when it arrives in February 2027. Expect to see it land then, for the XBOX Series X|S, PS5, Steam, and PC (via Epic).
