Acclaim and Wabisabi games hit the slopes with HYPERyuki

Snowboarding is a genre that you don’t see too often anymore, but Acclaim is set to bring it back with HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate.

How long has it been since we’ve seen a snowboarding game? All the rage in the 90s, the sub-genre of extreme sports hasn’t been all that prolific in the modern age. Actually, we can’t even remember when there was an entry in the genre at all. And that’s especially true for one that caught fire with players.

Somebody remembers those games of yore fondly though, and said people would be over at Acclaim, and developer Wabisabi. The result? That would be HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate, a title that looks to deliver thrills and chills on the slopes.

The game was revealed at BitSummit in Kyoto, Japan, and cites the likes of SSX and Jet Grind Radio as inspiration. Those are some big time titles. And if their mentions grabbed your attention, then this mashup might be for you. From the first trailer, it looks like HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate will stock trick-filled action, wrapped up in some slick cel-shaded visuals.

“As Mexican 90s kids, we grew up watching anime on national TV and playing Japanese games nonstop,” said Anward Noriega, CEO and co-founder of Wabisabi Games. “We’ve always been deeply in love with Japanese pop culture, so having the chance to showcase HYPERyuki to a Japanese audience at BitSummit truly feels like a full-circle moment.”

Get ready for the slopes

As you’d expect, HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate will pack in multiple modes of play. Those will include both Challenge and Race modes, plus an endless “Chill” mode. Race mode will be open to multiplayer as well, for a little head-to-head.

Actually, maybe add a few more heads there, because HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate supports up to seven players online. Not only that, but fans can get down on some couch versus play as well, with split-screen action. Oh, and did we mention that there’s a dedicated mode that allows you to shred as a taco? Well, there is.

Altogether, the final version of HYPERyuki: Snowboard Syndicate will look to serve up:

• Challenge – Think you have what it takes to impress? In Challenge mode you’ll have to complete objectives to hit the highest score possible. Ride rails, collect trinkets, and hit impressive tricks to top the leaderboard.
• Race – Speed down the slopes against NPCs or other players in this fast-paced game mode. Tricks will increase your boost meter, making style and speed an important balance.
• Chill – Enjoy a calm experience, hang around the tracks, and enjoy the view in this endless mode. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even find some secrets along the way!
• Multiplayer – Compete against friends both online and in person! Play online with up to seven of your friends or play local multiplayer through split screen.
• Shred – Bomb the slopes as a sentient snowboarding taco!

As for release dates, those we don’t have just yet. Fans can however look for the game to arrive for the PC as well as “all major consoles”.
