Sonic Generations is back this fall, and it’s bringing Shadow the Hedgehog with it

Here’s a pretty big surprise, as Sega has revealed that “Sonic x Shadow Generations” is coming to consoles and PC this fall.

Then skates are kinda cool though

Something of a divisive figure, Shadow the Hedgehog has nonetheless been around for a long time. Having plagued the main ‘hog Sonic since 2001’s Sonic Adventure 2, he’s nonetheless one of the less-seen members of the platforming universe’s cast.

Hitting about ten years after Shadow’s debut, the 2011 hit Sonic Generations brought Sonic the Hedgehog back to his roots. It was a game that hit the mark for both 2D and 3D fans of the Blue Blur, and gave way to a few somewhat successful followups. But if you’ve been yearning for another go at that now-kinda classic title, Sega just answered your prayers.

Revealed today at the Sony State of Play event, Sonic x Shadow Generations will bring Sonic Generations back to consoles and the PC, with a pretty big change. That, as you’ve no doubt gathered, will be Shadow, who’ll get a brand new story campaign.

Weird? Maybe, but it’s also kinda neat.

SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS introduces a brand-new Shadow story campaign where his old nemesis, Black Doom, returns and threatens to take over the world. Fans can play as Shadow and dive into his dark past to unlock his inner powers, explore his backstory, and confront familiar foes to save the world and prove why he’s known as the Ultimate Life Form!

Sega press release

Wondering what’s happening with the core Sonic Generations campaign with all this Shadow spotlight-stealing? Well, not only will that part of the game be intact, but Sega says it’ll be fully remastered for this new release, and come complete with “new challenges, and more bonus content!”. So no worries if you’d rather play as Sonic, as you’ll get that chance once again.

Sonic x Shadow Generations will be aiming for a fall 2024 release for Switch, PC, and PlayStation and Xbox platforms. As a cool little bonus too, the game’s announcement comes complete with the reveal of a free costume that fans can deck Sonic out in, in last year’s Sonic Superstars game. Look for that to arrive on February 15th.
