QuakeCon ’25: A pair of id classics return with Heretic + Hexen

The original fantasy-themed first-person action titles are back, thanks to a QuakeCon surprise, with Heretic + Hexen.

Well, it was kind of a surprise

As every id Software fans knows all too well, QuakeCon can bring some nice little surprises in the way of new arrivals for classic games. Over the years, fans have seen same-day launches for DOOM and DOOM II, Quake, and Quake II. And if you thought this year would deliver something in the same vein, you were right.

QuakeCon 2025 saw a return for the long-awaited Heretic and Hexen games. Even better, both games have been delivered in one neat little package. Yes, “delivered”, as the Heretic + Hexen is here, and serving up fantasy action as you like it.

Re-presented by id in partnership with Nightdive Studios, the two classics have been bumped up a bit for modern platforms. Both games have “been restored with improved performance” and sport an
“enhanced” soundtrack from Andrew Hulshult. But that’s not all. On top of the improvements, a pair of fresh expansions are included in the deal as well.

Those who purchase Heretic + Hexen will receive:

  • Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders
  • Hexen: Beyond Heretic
  • Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel
  • Two all-new episodes created in collaboration between individuals at id Software + Nightdive Studios:
    • Heretic: Faith Renewed
    • Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur

Existing owners of any of the above games will receive a free upgrade to the new combined game and can still access their previously owned versions.

Bethesda press release

Heretic + Hexen is out now for play on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC. Naturally, it’s also ready for action via Xbox Game Pass. Want the full details on the release(s)? Click here for the official site.
