The Hellboy Universe gets even more otherworldly with Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time

You don’t normally associate time-travel with the Hellboy Universe, but that’s just what’s coming with Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time.

The Captain, we presume?

When you look back upon creator Mike Mignola’s Hellboy Universe, it’s kind of shocking how much its various action and horror series’ have covered. Biblical themes are front and center of course, but the line has also delved into ancient civilizations, featured cosmic horror aplenty, showcased ghosts and specters, and had a dose of various kinds of psychic phenomena. Heck, it’s even had an alien or two, and even ended up in a far-future, post-apocalypse.

One thing the Hellboy Universe hasn’t had though? Time-travel. And yes, if you read the headline, then you know the next sentence includes a ’til now’, and indeed it does when it concerns Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time. An upcoming title from Mignola and Bruce Zick, with the latter co-writing and handling art chores, Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time ties directly into Witchfinder, and is a foray into sci-fi that has a decidedly ‘Hellboy’ touch.

On a dark night in 1880s England, the ever-adventurous Whittier family, along with Edward Grey, are attempting to send a man into the realm between reality and the Beyond to free the trapped spirit of a Whittier uncle. But his expedition into space—and time—will take him to places beyond even the Witchfinder’s knowledge. Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time follows an intrepid time-travelling explorer on a journey to a new dimension. He soon discovers that the monsters he encounters aren’t his only problem, as time itself might represent the ultimate danger.

“I have always loved building new worlds, whether as a concept artist for Disney and PIxar, or a creator of comics for Dark Horse,” says Bruce Zick. “And now, I get to design a crazy fantastic reality based on the fearless imagination of Mike Mignola and his Hellboy Universe. Mike is a pure genius storyteller and when he pitched this new story to me I felt that I would need to use everything I’ve learned over my entire career to make his idea come to life as something we’ve never seen before. When you follow Captain Henry and his newfound Time Traveler sidekick, you begin in Victorian England, then to a Ghost realm and finally to a retro/tekno/dimension that descends into a nightmare realm of monsters, ghosts, and a terrifying Time King. Not to mention a peppering of familiar faces from the pages of Hellboy–including Hellboy himself.”

“This is an idea that had been banging around in the back of my head for a very long time,” Says Mike Mignola. “I’m not at all a science fiction guy—unless, of course, it’s that kind of VICTORIAN science fiction where guys tamper with forces they don’t understand and jump themselves into nowhere in a bubble-helmet diving suit made out of leather and heavy metal rivets. And, of course, you need a haunted polar bear.”

“Captain Henry is a soldier and fortune hunter in the grand tradition of heroic and mythic figures, and if you look closely you just might find him familiar in a surprising and unexpected way,” adds  Zick. “One really fun part of building this world was exploring a new mythology for time traveling, from the origins of the science, to the fearless adventurers and their fabulous Time Machines.”
