One of the lesser known DK titles, Donkey Kong 64 is making the leap from the N64 to the Switch next week.
Dee-Kay… Donkey Kong
The Donkey Kong train just won’t stop rolling. Fresh off of the simian hero’s latest title, the Switch 2’s Bananza, he’s back for a retro romp. That’ll come via the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack edition of Donkey Kong 64.
Nintendo just made the reveal for that release, which will see the game added to the subscription service on June 3rd. It’s probably fair though, to sat that the Nintendo 64 game is one of the line’s lesser known titles, which might make it a great play-through for unfamiliar fans.
It’s not all that often that you see it mentioned in any light after all, and we can’t say that we’re overly familiar with it either. From the look of it though, it was massively different from what’d come before. Remember, this was the “3D”-happy 90s, and we’re talking about the N64.
And very much fitting with that era (and console), Donkey Kong 64 was a 3D game. That was a stark variation from the “Country” style that fans had become used to. Nevertheless, it’s a fully fledged Rare-developed title, so the pedigree at least is there.
In this case means four Kongs to pick from, and jungle antics along the lines of collectible-hunts and mini-games.
Donkey Kong 64 begins with K. Rool back again for another nefarious Kong-quest. Our furry hero Donkey Kong (the leader of the bunch) must take the fight to K. Rool and the Kremlings, reclaim his Golden Bananas and save his homeland from certain doom. Choose from DK, Diddy Kong, Tiny Kong, Lanky Kong and Chunky Kong and play solo in a quirky adventure or with friends in competitive battle arenas.
Nintendo press release
While Donkey Kong 64 is scheduled to arrive on June 3rd, remember that this isn’t a ‘retail release’. Instead, the game is coming to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription service. Naturally, that means that you’ll have to have a subscription to play, so just keep that in mind.
