System Shock version 1.2 arrives, bringing new playable character, expanded ending and more

PC players have another reason to dive back into Nightdive Studios’ excellent System Shock today, with the release of update 1.2.

More to love

Launched exclusively for the PC last year, System Shock’s full remake from Nightdive Studios was a fairly big hit right off the bat. The game completely recreated the 90s original, streamlining it and giving it a gorgeous modern coat of paint. Now Nightdive is back once again, bringing that first-person title up to version 1.2, and this update is way more than just bug fixes.

Update 1.2 includes a hefty amount of new features, including a second playable character (a female hacker), a waypoint system for easy mode, and a “revised ending”. Want more? Well that’s good, because it’s also packing “enhanced enemy encounters” with both new attacks and behavior, updated balancing, and of course improvements, enhancements, and those aforementioned fixes.

System Shock v1.2 Key Features:

  • Unravel the chilling story of SHODAN’s rise and explore the mysteries of Citadel Station, piecing together the truth in this atmospheric sci-fi world

  • Face perilous traps, puzzles, and a legion of hostile and mutated creatures — created and controlled by the delightfully villainous SHODAN herself

  • A newly reworked ending that upgrades the final confrontation with SHODAN!

  • Choose between a male or female-presenting Hacker protagonist

  • Enhanced mouse and keyboard Interface and improved support for gamepads

Nightdive Studios press release

While we’re talking about new System Shock stuff too, don’t forget that the game is incoming for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The new console version will be landing as both a digital download and physical disc-based edition on May 21st, 2024. Fans can look for that to be the full experience too, with update 1.2 included.

If you don’t have the PC version just yet, and you’d prefer giving rogue AI SHODAN a run for her money on that platform, you’re in luck. Nightdive says that PC players can grab a copy for a slick 55% off the standard asking price (Steam, GOG, Epic, or Humble) until April 25th.
