The Last Case of Benedict Fox scares up an adventure this week

A Metroidvania steeped in Lovecraftian lore, Rogue Games and Plot Twist Studio’s The Last Case of Benedict Fox is finally out for the Xbox and PC.

Otherworldly

Does Lovecraft ever get old? Not from the looks of it, as the iconic writer’s works are still the basis of plenty of video games in the modern age. Of course, those games are usually not direct adaptations of anything, but instead play off of the themes and ideas of the “Lovecraft” universe. You just can’t keep an old one down, after all.

The latest in that realm looks like something special too, with The Last Case of Benedict Fox. A side-scrolling Metroidvania, Benedict Fox tells the tale of the title detective, a man pulled into a realm of otherworldly horrors.

That horror is framed by what’s described as a “Burtonesque art style”, and it’s easy to see the influences of the famed director in the just-released launch look. It’s also easy to see that Benedict Fox isn’t just a normal man. He’s possessed by a mysterious force, one that guides his hand, even in the terrible split-world he’s found himself in.

Check it out below.

Step into roaring 20’s Boston as the eponymous self-proclaimed detective to experience the deep mauve haze, sinister spires, foreboding footpaths, and unnerving reverberations of Limbo. As Benedict, you will delve further into oblivion, in a journey to uncover the truth behind a mystifying family tragedy while answering to the whims of a demon that possesses your soul. Explore memories of the dead through a chilling narrative interwoven with exhilarating combat and mind-bending puzzle design. Explore the arcane realms of life and death in the universe of Limbo as far as your psyche will allow, but beware, this case can easily consume you… leaving behind a haunting and nightmarish comatose in its wake. Will this case be solved or will you remain stuck in Limbo forever?
