The original Darksiders returns again, for current-gen consoles

No, we’re (still) not talking about the new Darksiders game that’s inbound. But nonetheless, the original title in the set is back.

Darksiders is Warmastered. Again

Wow has it been a long road for the original Darksiders game. Starring the Horseman (of the biblical “Four” fame) called War, the original game in the now long-lived series first emerged way back in 2010. But that was far from all for the action/role-playing game.

While the series itself raged on with multiple sequels, that first Darksiders would see a resurrection as well. That came via Darksiders: Warmastered Edition in 2016. The remastering saw the game hit the PS4 and Xbox One, but would see a port in 2019, which brought it to the Switch. And now? Well, now it’s Joining Darksiders II on the PS5 and XBOX Series X|S. And quite frankly, it’s looking as sharp as Chaoseater.

The new release of Darksiders: Warmastered Edition features “native 4K rendering”, according to publisher THQ Nordic. On top of that, fans can also look for “smooth and stable 60 FPS gameplay, and Photo Mode support”. From the looks of it too, all of that is exclusive to current generation hardware. So if you’re a big fan, you might want to check it out.

Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War – the first Horseman of the Apocalypse – stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between Heaven and Hell. In the slaughter that followed, the demonic forces defeated the heavenly hosts and laid claim to Earth.

Brought before the sacred Charred Council, War is indicted for his crimes and stripped of his powers. Dishonored and facing his own death, he is granted one final opportunity to return to Earth, uncover the truth, and punish those responsible.

Hunted by vengeful angels and pursued across the ruins of a devastated world, War must forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts while battling through wastelands and dungeons in his quest for vengeance and redemption.

A tale of fire and giant swords

For fans who are unfamiliar with the original Darksiders, it stars the Horseman called War. For the most part too, it’s not set on some intangible plane of existence, but Earth. However, we stress that this isn’t the world you know, as it’s been devastated by the Revelatory apocalypse. Sort of.

Yes, it’s semi-fueled by the tale of Revelations in the Bible, but its is an end of the world brought about by other means. And in the wake of this war to end all wars, it’s War and his fellow Horsemen that are framed for triggering events too soon.

That translates to demons running wild on the planet, while angels soar in its skies. Marked for elimination, it’s up to the Horsemen to clear their own names, and that’s just what War aims to do. As mentioned too, all of that plays out in action/RPG style.

War can lay into his demonic foes with the massive Chaoseater sword, as he battles through dungeons and a hub-world. He’ll also have access to his steed, Ruin, to make his way a little faster. Being an RPG too, players can look for both unlockable abilities and weapon upgrades, on top of a somewhat customizable combat style.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition is live now for the PS5 and XBOX Series X|S, coming complete with the improvements listed above. Interestingly, it’s priced in at $29.99 USD, which is a bump up from last-gen’s $19.99 USD. Speaking of, the Xbox One edition of the game is seeing an increase to the same price, though the PS4 version will remain ten bucks cheaper.
