Graven brings first-person fantasy to consoles today

You don’t see fantasy FPS’ too often these days, and if you’ve been hankering for one, then you might want to check out Graven.

Graven shooters

Technically, Graven isn’t a ‘first-person shooter’, as it’s got sword and sorcery too. Still, it’s as apt a term for the game as it was for games like Hexen and Heretic, and with that in mind it’s especially nice to see Graven arrive on consoles.

Maybe something of an acquired taste, as it seems to not be an all-out, fast-action affair, Graven set players to work against a corrupted priestly order. You play as a former member of that same order, who’s out to put an end to its demonic ways, and save the world. So, you know, no pressure.

Rise as an Exiled Priest of the Orthogonal Order and embark on a mission of bloody vengeance. Guided by the divine instruction of The Creator, cleanse the Order of its corruption in hopes of saving the world from rapidly encroaching evils.

Armed with a staff and a journal, set out into dark lands using magic to spread fires, freeze rivers, charge up machinery, and more, all while finding weapons to upgrade and evil to vanquish. Explore expansive hubs, solve tricky puzzles, and uncover heresies to exhume the evil rooted across the land once and for all.

3D Realms press release

Stocking a bestiary of 20 enemies to smite, bosses to overcome, and play spread out across three hub worlds, Graven has a pretty great creative team behind it. The game’s designs were created by Duke Nukem 3D and Half-Life’s Chuck Jones, and features the vocals of one Stephan Weyte, who you might know from games like Blood, Fire Emblem, and Dusk. On top of all of that, the title also features up to a whopping 8 players in its co-op mode. Pretty slick, that.

If you’re ready to grab some friends (or go solo) and engage with the forces of darkness, Graven is out right now for modern Xbox and PlayStation platforms (plus, of course, the PC).
