Episode 3 of The Winter King debuts this Sunday on MGM+

Continuing its new vision of the Arthurian legend, The Winter King launches into part 3, as the first 2 episodes go free.

While recent stabs at reinventing the story of King Arthur haven’t made much of an impact, MGM+’s The Winter King is taking a different route. Instead of a one-off film or a mini-series, the streaming platform’s vision is a full season, loaded with 10 episodes.

Produced by Sony Pictures Television’s Bad Wolf and directed by Peaky Blinders’ Otto Bathurst, the show also shifts the time period. Instead of focusing on Arthur’s reign, The Winter King looks to see his return from exile to the land that will be Britain, and follows his rise as its mythical uniting force.

The Winter King is set in the fifth century, long before Britain was united, in a brutal land of warring factions and tribes, where lives were often fleeting. The series follows Arthur Pendragon as he evolves from outcast to legendary warrior and leader.

That’s just a general look at the show, which again is already 2 episodes-deep. As mentioned, those 2 installments are hitting for free on what MGM+ calls “partner platforms”. That should deliver the program to a wider audience, and they’ll be available outside of MGM’s service until November 5th, 2023.

As for episode 3, again that’s on track for a September 10th launch (at 9pm), exclusively on MGM+. There’s no video tease, but the synopsis includes plenty of political intrigue in proto-Britannia.

Arthur takes Gundleus prisoner and Nimue begins to plan her revenge. Arthur learns that Gundleus’ uncle Gorfydd is preparing for war.
