Sylvester Stallone to star as former superhero Samaritan this August

Heading to Prime Video this summer, actor Sylvester Stallone will headline an original superhero film about a retired vigilante named Samaritan.

Well, ‘retired’

You don’t see too many original superhero properties in the modern age. That’s understandable, since studios and fans are more or less still hungry for the big names in the comics game. And when you do see something original, that’s never been seen in any format, it’s kind of an oddity.

Sylvester Stallone’s Samaritan is looking every bit that, and I mean that in the best possible way. Prime Video and MGM released a few images for the upcoming superhero tale today, along with a brief synopsis, and it actually sounds pretty cool.

Basically, the story revolves around Samaritan, a superhero who’s been believed dead for years. Turns out though, he took that perception and used it to retire, and has been living a civilian life.

Of course, eventually all good things come to an end, and that leads into what’s happening in Granite City in the present day.

Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone) is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos, Sam makes it his mission to coax his neighbor out of hiding to save the city from ruin.

Prime Video and MGM press release

Based upon a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut and from MGM and director Julius Avery, Samaritan stars Sylvester Stallone, Javon “Wanna” Walton, Pilou Asbæk, Dascha Polanco, and Moises Arias. Look for it globally, on Prime Video, this August the 26th.
