Series X loses a major launch title as Halo Infinite delayed

Today brings a pretty big blow to Microsoft’s Xbox Series X launch. Developer 343 has announced that Halo Infinite has been delayed to ’21.

Infinite wait

Yes this is a weird year. With everything else that’s going on, including all of the serious real-world happenings, things like video games have taken a back seat for most. But it inarguably adds to the overall weirdness of 2020 to see that the big game for the Xbox Series X’ launch this fall/holiday won’t make the system’s debut.

This afternoon developer 343 Industries took to Twitter to make the announcement that Infinite would be delayed. How long? Well, if you were hoping for a few weeks (and missed the beginning of this article), then you’re going to be disappointed.

While the statement doesn’t actually say it, from all appearances, Halo Infinite has been nudged into 2021. According to the Studio Head Chris Lee, the game will miss holiday 2020, and the reason is -you guessed it- Covid.

The virus has made development of the game difficult, according to Lee. And that development isn’t “sustainable for the well-being of our team or the overall success of the game”.

Here’s the full statement:

So, as you can see, there’s something else missing, other than a new Halo in 2020. Not only is the game delayed, but there’s also apparently not even a new release window to talk about. Cross your fingers that that’s something that gets rectified soon.

And maybe also cross ’em that there’s something else incredibly compelling lurking in the Series X’ launch catalog.
