Finally, we get a better look at the new Call of Cthulhu

A long time coming, a fresh series of screens has been released for Cyanide’s Call of Cthulhu.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the latest video game revision of the Call of Cthulhu mythos. Super popular as horror properties go, Cthulhu is a modern classic from the mind of author H.P. Lovecraft.

For the uninitiated, it’s a tale of ancient extraterrestrial gods. And these are gods of the not-so nice variety. Mental anguish plays a huge part in the mythos as well, with characters going mad from simply looking upon the horrors that the main villain (Cthulhu) and his cultists can unleash.

In the video game universe, there’ve been only a handful of titles to get things ‘right’. Personally, I dug the Sherlock Holmes vs Cthulhu title (The Awakened) that came out a few years back. And of course, I have to mention Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth from the Xbox (OG) era. That was a great one.

As good as it was though, so far anyway, developer Cyanide’s Call of Cthulhu is looking even better. Just to couch it, we know next to nothing about the game itself except that it’s based on tabletop company Chaosium’s version of the fiction. All of the early screens and looks at it though, have been spot on.

Dark, foreboding, and loaded with atmosphere, it looks like this might be a flagship game for the IP. We’ll see though.

So what do we know?

Call is an RPG/investigation game. And I’m going to guess that that means that it’ll be light on combat, and heavy on exploration and running from things that are trying to gut you. Honestly, that’s how you want it for a Cthulhu title. Having an Ash-like badass in the lead, hacking demonic enemies to pieces just wouldn’t fit. Again though, we’ll see.

A few things are for sure though. And those are that the era is 1920’s US, and you’ll play as war vet and PI, Edward Pierce. Your mission? Uncover the details behind the death of “Sarah Hawkins and her family on the isolated island of Darkwater”. Of course, you might not like those “details” once you discover them.

Cyanide also promises that the game will indeed have a mental component. For Pierce, his investigation will lead him “to the fringes of the paranormal, where reality and illusion begin to blend… or is this the fruit of your imagination?” Now that sounds mighty interesting.
