SDCC 23: It’s DC x Legendary as the Justice League meets the might of Godzilla and King Kong

Who had this one on their 2023 score card? DC Comics’ Justice League is set to take on a pair of very angry kaiju.

Let them fight

If you love wholesale destruction in your comics, then this one should be on your watch list. It’s kind of a given, what with the most powerful team in DC Comics squaring off against the legendary, impossibly huge monsters that are Kong and Godzilla. That’s exactly what we’re set to see though, in Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong.

The new comic was just revealed at SDCC, and will team writer Brian Buccellato and artist Christian Duce, both DC Comics mainstays, with colorist Luis Guerrero. The result, as you can see, is an impressive looking, city-wrecking romp.

“As a comics fan—there’s nothing more fun and exciting than exploring those amazing ‘What If’ situations that come up when fandoms cross streams!” said Jim Lee, DC President, Publisher and Chief Creative Officer. “In this case, it’s a matchup of the world’s greatest Super Heroes in the Justice League who take on not only the King of the Monsters—Godzilla—but the mighty Kong himself! It’s a crossover no-holds-barred battle, decades in the making, and no bona fide comics fan will want to miss it!”

“There have been a couple of classic crossovers since I started reading comics: Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-ManThe Uncanny X-Men and the New Teen Titans—and we hope Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong joins that list of unforgettable meetings,” said Robert Napton, SVP & Publisher, Legendary Comics. “I am grateful to everyone at DC, Legendary Entertainment, and Toho International for the passionate support we received to have these worlds collide!”

DC Comics press release

Collide they will too, as we’re not really just talking about Godzilla and Kong. The comic sounds like it will bring a good deal of the Monsterverse into the DCU, as a result of a battle between the League and the Legion of Doom. Spilling forward from that is a rift between dimensions, that basically leaks kaiju. Godzilla will be the first of those, who’ll cross paths with none other than Superman.

But as you’ll see in the preview below, Kong meets the Legion in short order as well… and maybe a Skullcrawler or two for good measure.

“I’ve had the good fortune to write most of the legendary DC Super Heroes before—from my time on The FlashDetective Comics, and Injustice,” said Brian Buccellato. “This time I get to build something way larger-than-life using all the toys in two different sandboxes. It’s such a thrill to tear open both the DC Universe and Legendary’s Monsterverse for this dream project.”

Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong #1 will hit stands on October 14th, complete with a main cover by Drew Johnson. Fans can also look for variant covers from Jim Lee and Scott Williams, Rafael Albuquerque, Francesco Mattina, and Dan Mora and Alan Quah. But if you’re really into variants, don’t you dare miss the Godzilla “Roar Sound FX” gatefold variant cover and the Kong “Roar Sound FX”gatefold variant cover.

Both of those will actually feature sound chips. And when you crack ’em open, you’re going to hear from the cover-beast themselves, loud and clear. And aside from the sound effects, you’ll also be treated to artwork from Christian Duce, so it’s a win-win.

The roaring comics are set to land in stores a bit later than the standard and variant issues though, so look for them on November 14th.
