GBA classic Fire Emblem coming to Switch Online this month

Here’s a nice surprise for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. A true classic of the Game Boy Advance era is on the way.

Fire it up

As Game Boy Advance games go, there are quite a few that you could probably call ‘classics’. But right there with any and all of those, would have to be the original Fire Emblem. Well, original to the west anyway.

Nintendo points out that the GBA’s Fire Emblem was just the first game in the series to see release outside of Japan. But for much of the world, it served as the introduction to what’s become a much-loved tactical RPG universe.

And now you’ll be able to re-play this icon, or try it for the very first time, thanks to Nintendo’s subscription-based virtual console.

In Fire Emblem, the nation of Lycia stands on the precipice of war after centuries of peace. Turmoil grows as noble houses plot treason, allies become enemies and armies stand poised for combat … all while a mysterious figure manipulates empires from the shadows. Now Lyn, along with Eliwood and Hector, must amass their own army to fight back against the forces that would destroy everything they hold dear – and before the world is burned to ash.

Over the course of the story, you’ll gather heroes to your side, train them to excel with a wide array of weapons and classes, and further hone their skills on the battlefield. In battle, strategize your course of action around a variety of terrain and conditions. Then take command of the field and lead your units to victory by fulfilling specific objectives. But be warned: In this Fire Emblem game, if your soldiers meet their end, they’re gone forever.

Nintendo press release

Ready to play? Well, again, you’ll need to be subscribed to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack to do so. But if you are, then you’re good to go for Fire Emblem’s launch on June 22nd. Or the 23rd. Maybe.

While the trailer says the 23rd, Nintendo is saying the 22nd. So we’re going to guess that’s the actual date (but who knows).
