Who you gonna call? How about the new ‘asymmetrical multiplayer’ Ghostbusters title?

Here’s a surprise announcement for your Tuesday afternoon; there’s a new Ghostbusters game on the horizon. This one mixes in a little multiplayer action.

Makes me feel good

Ghostbusters is yet another classic series that’s been on the receiving end of a renaissance as of late. The iconic 80s property has had a line of new action figures debut (among a myriad of other collectibles), and a fresh film hit theaters. The latter bringing the remaining Boys in Gray back to the big screen for the first time since GBII.

But while there’s been a good deal of love for Ghostbusters, there’s yet to be a full-up video game to 2009’s video game. While today’s announcement isn’t quite that, it is pretty darn slick nonetheless.

Coming up later this year from Sony Pictures Consumer Products and developer IllFonic is Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed. The new title will bring the IP into the world of multiplayer gaming, with an asymmetrical experience. Yep, that’s right, Spirits Unleashed will let players slip into the boost of the ‘Busters or a cantankerous undead creep.

As you’ll see in the trailer too, this new title is very much in line with canon. Your Ghostbuster will be working under one Winston Zeddemore, and you’ll be visiting the famous Ray’s Occult Books.

Unleashed

Put on a Proton Pack, grab a Ghost Trap, and monitor the trusty PKE Meter as a Ghostbuster in a team of four brave souls pursuing ghastly ghosts terrorizing public locations. Work together to find the Ghost, blast them with streams from the Particle Thrower to tether the slimy foe in place, and shut the trap at the perfect moment! Keep citizens calm and corral the Ghost before the environment gets too haunted.

Play as a Ghost, scaring unsuspecting citizens at various locations. You ain’t afraid of no Ghostbuster, thanks to the ability to fly and teleport between rifts. Possess objects lying around each room to sneak by roaming Ghostbusters and frighten passersby. If that doesn’t work, sliming and summoning ghoulish minions will. Haunt each map to completion as one of multiple Ghosts with different abilities.

Sony Pictures Consumer Products press release

In addition to the above, players will be able to customize their Ghostbuster or ghost. In the case of the former, the firehouse will be a kind of hub, allowing players to test out different spirit-ensnaring weapons, and talk with actor Ernie Hudson’s Winston. Yes, the game will feature his vocal talent, along with Dan Ackroyd.

Featuring a solo option and cross-platform play as well, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is set to arrive on the Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, and PC around the end of the year.
