Oddball set of One-Shots hitting stands in 2019 for Marvel Comics’ 80th

There was a time when superheroes didn’t rule the roost. That’s the era that a new set of one-shot comics will be playing off of for Marvel’s 80s birthday.

Before the heroes

Way back, before the Avengers, the X-Men, or any one else, there was a very different set of comics on newsstands. Those books were all about war stories, crime fiction, sci-fi, and yes even romance. Once the superhero set took over, almost all of that faded away, especially for the biggest of publishers. But now it’s coming back.

Well, it’s sort of coming back anyway. Marvel Comics will be bringing some of those old ideas out of mothballs for a series of singe issues next year. The three one-shots will dig up westerns, cartoon animals, and romance stories for Marvel’s 80th anniversary celebration. Each one will have a solid creative team too, so these might actually be worth your while.

They include:

  • THE GUNHAWKS #1
Written by DAVID & MARIA LAPHAM
    Art by LUCA PIZZARI
    Cover by GERARDO ZAFFINO
    On Sale 2/6/19
  • LOVE ROMANCES #1
Written by DENNIS HOPELESS, GAIL SIMONE, JON ADAMS & MORE
Art by JON ADAMS, ANNAPAOLA MARTELLO, ROGE ANTONIO & MORE
    Cover by PYEONG-JUN PARK
    On Sale 2/20/19
  • ZIGGY PIG – SILLY SEAL COMICS #1
    Written by FRANK TIERI
    Art by JACOB CHABOT
    Cover by NIC KLEIN
    On Sale 2/27/19

Right now there’s no word on whether these might bear longer lasting fruit if they sell well, or if they’re just one-shot stories no matter what. It’s also not clear what else Marvel might have on tap for the big 8-0, and if there might be more of these one-shot style books ready for later in 2019.

Stay tuned, we’ll keep you updated.
