Activision and Beenox deliver a follow-up to their first take on the rebooted Spider-Man movie franchise with the Amazing Spider-Man 2.
“The first The Amazing Spider-Man game gave players their own beautifully animated, free-roaming city of Manhattan to traverse and explore – a playground of majestic scale in which to live out our common hero fantasies,” said Thomas Wilson, Co-Studio Head of Beenox. “And the overwhelming message from fans was: ‘MORE!’ That’s what our team is working toward with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – we’re giving gamers more abilities, more upgrades, more challenges, and more freedom to progress. And with the game launching alongside the new movie, offering an expanded interactive experience beyond the film, fans of the franchise won’t want to miss playing it.”
Like in the first game in the new series, TASM2 is a side-story to the upcoming film that will encompass all kinds of new and familiar characters. In a pretty awesome twist, players will find that the story is going to have a decent amount for Spidey’s unmasked persona, Peter Parker, to do too.
Pete’s skills as an investigative reporter and photojournalist will come into play in the game as he attempts to uncover some of the motives behind the baddies that he’ll be facing as Spider-Man. That’s a really neat addition speaking as an old school Spidey fan and it just might offer something of a glimpse of some of the stuff that hasn’t really been talked up about the film. If Peter is a photog in the movie sequel, something that wasn’t touched upon in the origin story that was The Amazing Spider-Man, then it also might mean that a certain blustery editor-in-chief might be in there too.
There’s also a ‘hero or menace’ mechanic at work in the game (which also bodes well for the inclusion of JJJ) where Spider-Man’s rep will get better or worse depending on how many random NYC crimes he stops or ignores. This is probably going to come into play big time as players try to manage time on ‘mission’ objectives and stopping supervillains, against halting street crime and catching thieves just like flies.
So far, everything sounds like a massive improvement over The Amazing Spider-Man and a terrific evolution of the character for Spider-Man fans. Developer Beenox has built a solid track record for themselves over the years with Spidey and it looks like their latest take on the character just might be their best.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 launches for the Xbox 360/One, PS3/4, PC, Wii U and 3DS right along side the movie this coming Spring.
