The NEOGEO AES is back?!

A legend returns this fall. PLAION REPLAI and SNK are bringing the NEOGEO AES+ to fans, complete with games and accessories.

The original NEOGEO returns

No, it’s no dream or imaginary tale. The NEOGEO AES console is indeed coming back to the market, and it’ll do so complete with cartridges and accessories. The return of the iconic console is one of the coolest things we’ve seen in a while, and is in effect a celebration of the 35th anniversary of the original.

Hailing from PLAION REPLAI and SNK, the unit will pack a “1:1 direct replica of the original arcade board used on SNK’s MVS”. With that, you might be thinking that this doesn’t sound like it’s going to be a micro-console, and you’d be right.

According to the press release, the NEOGEO AES+ sounds like it’ll effectively be a modernized re-release. The system will be so faithful to the original, that the carts from decades gone by will even run on it. Yep, if you have classic SNK titles on NEOGEO cartridges, you’ll be able to play them. How freaking cool is that?

Often imitated but never equalled, the NEOGEO AES represented the definition of high-end, desirable gaming tech, lusted after by all those who played, but proving beyond the reach of casual gamers thanks to the premium cost of hardware and game cartridges, many of which still command huge prices today on the collector market.

Honoring the prestigious hardware in the manner it deserves, the return of the NEOGEO AES represents a milestone in retro hardware re-releases. In keeping with the original ethos of “Zero Compromise” gaming, the NEOGEO AES+ is no mere micro console, offering unrivalled authenticity designed to appeal to the true gamer and discerning collector. Forgoing the traditional route of emulation, the NEOGEO AES+ utilizes ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuits), presenting a wholly authentic experience for both hardware and software, looking, feeling and playing just as you remember, truly “arcade perfect” in each and every way. The new hardware is so authentic, in fact, that the NEOGEO AES+ offers full compatibility with original NEOGEO AES cartridges, ideal for those with a pre-existing collection of games, wishing to play on modern displays.

PLAION press release

From the arcades to you

As you can see there, the NEOGEO AES+ more or less is the classic unit, albeit with those included modernities. PLAION says that the console will feature upgrades “without altering or compromising the console features so inherent to the original appeal.” For example, while it’s set to sport an AV port, it’ll also have a low-latency HDMI output. Using that will bump resolutions to 1080p on supported modern televisions.

There’s more as well. “On-screen BIOS and DIP Switches located on the bottom of the console allow for instant switching of territory language selection”, as well as “overclocking the hardware or choosing different display modes”. Lots of neat options there. On top of all of that too, fans will find that the new console also has low power usage, and the ability to save high-scores.

As you can also see in the above presentation, the NEOGEO AES+ will hit the market with a pair of editions. There’s the base model, with mimics the original, as well as the 35th anniversary unit. The latter will come in an ice white color-scheme to differentiate itself, as well as a special matching copy of Metal Slug.

Accessories will include the famed NEOGEO arcade stick, in both wired or wireless forms, control pads, and memory cards. A cool note on the latter too, is that the memory cards won’t require a cell battery anymore. Modern convenience wins again.

NEOGEO AES+ Ultimate Edition

While there are only two colors of the console coming up, there’s also an Ultimate Edition. A special box set, the Ultimate Edition includes the black version of the console, as well as two arcade sticks (wired and wireless), the wireless game pad, all of the games launching with the console (ten of them) and more.

About those games

We mentioned above that the original NEOGEO carts would work with this new console, but PLAION and SNK are creating a complete experience with the NEOGEO AES+. So yeah, that means the companies will be re-releasing some games.

The fresh initiative will launch with a total of ten of those, that run the gamut from Magician Lord to The King of Fighters 2002.

They include:

  • Metal Slug
  • The King of Fighters 2002
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves
  • Big Tournament Golf
  • Shock Troopers
  • Samurai Shodown V Special
  • Pulstar
  • Twinkle Star Sprites
  • Magician Lord
  • Over Top
