A PC horror classic is indeed coming back, thanks to Vertigo Games. The 7th Guest Remake is looking as faithful as it gets.

Well, how’s this for a nice surprise? While it certainly wasn’t on our radar, Vertigo Games has just unveiled a full remake of the iconic 90s horror title, The 7th Guest. There’s a name that should strike a chord with anybody who was into the platform back in 1993.

Weaving a supernatural tale, the original release was one of the first games to hit the CD-ROM format. It was a puzzle game, but one that was billed as something of a playable horror movie. And yes, that means it played out in full-motion video style.

As such, it’s definitely a different kind of game for developer Vertigo Games. If that name sounds familiar, you might know it from games like Metro Awakening and Arizona Sunshine. The 7th Guest Remake though, is decidedly not either of those titles.

Six guests arrive at a foreboding mansion, but something sinister is at play. The wealthy recluse and toymaker Henry Stauf lurks in the shadows, and a dark power hangs over the house, shrouded in mystery. Who is the seventh guest, what does Henry want with them, and who will live to tell the tale?

As players explore the eerie mansion, its puzzles grow increasingly challenging, with dangers lurking around every corner. Every shadow, distant creak, and flicker of light builds tension as the house slowly reveals its secrets.

The 7th Guest Remake is the ultimate mystery adventure for players who love mind-bending puzzles, haunting exploration, and a chilling story.

Yes, it’s actually FMV

We get it, that might not actually look like full-motion video in that trailer. It didn’t to us either, but Vertigo Games says that there’s a tech at work here called volumetric video. Via the innovation, “live-action performances are captured in full 3D”. According to the company, that allows for real actors to appear in the game’s world, “making every encounter feel immediate and unsettling”. If these are the results, then you can color us impressed, as we’re thinking the game is looking great so far.

Adding to that are what Vertigo describes as “visual effects and optical illusions”. Players will have to investigate every “nook and cranny” of the old haunted dwelling, which will include both unlocking new rooms to explore and digging up some old fashioned hidden secrets.

Naturally, the visuals are just part of the equation. The puzzle solving gameplay will return for The 7th Guest Remake, though it sounds as though those brain-teasers will be all redesigned. Every “puzzle is woven into the story and rooted in the mansion’s lore”, according to the company. Even so though, fans can also expect for said puzzles to have “recognizable elements”. So it sounds like there’ll be call-backs to the original release.

Before you get too excited though, there’s no release date just yet for The 7th Guest Remake. But stay tuned. Vertigo Games says that it’s coming up later this year, and on the way for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC. Wish-listing is actually open right now too, on the PS5 and PC, for those who’d like to mark interest in a copy.
