SDCC ’25: Silver Surfer and Beta Ray Bill join the growing cast of Marvel Cosmic Invasion

Dotemu and Tribute Games’ upcoming beat ’em up, Marvel Cosmic Invasion isn’t done with its playable roster just yet.

To me, my board

Just announced at Comic Con, two more huge names have joined the already well stocked cast of Marvel Cosmic Invasion. From Doetmu and developer Tribute Games, the upcoming title brings a 90s-centric cast of Marvel Comics’ biggest heroes to bear against a cadre of its most dastardly villains. The latter is including the mastermind behind it all, and ruler of the Negative Zone, Annihilus.

The title plays out in classic beat ’em up, arcade style, and players are able to field two heroes via tag-team mechanics. And when it comes to who’ll be playable, the options aren’t gonna be thin. Dotemu has so far announced a bunch, including Captain America, Spider-Man, and Wolverine. But now you can add tow more names to the list.

The announcements came via a Deep Dive panel at SDCC yesterday, and revealed the alien wielder of Stormbreaker, Beta Ray Bill, and none other than the Silver Surfer.

As unveiled during the MARVEL Cosmic Invasion Deep Dive – A Nostalgia Driven Approach to your Favorite Characters panel, two newcomers debuted in a trailer featuring striking animation fit for a comic book, paired with a first look at both fighters in action:

  • The Silver Surfer, a metallic-skinned humanoid alien hailing from the Fantastic Four series. Imbued with the Power Cosmic, the Surfer can stun any adversary. Easily gliding in the skies or close to the ground, insectoid invaders can’t escape Galactus’ former herald.
  • Beta Ray Bill, a fan-favorite recognized by the mighty Thor as a proven ally, and wielder of his own devastating hammer known as Stormbreaker. Half-cyborg, half Korbinite, Bill’s strength can squash any bug battalion standing in his way.

Earth’s mightiest roster

If you’re keeping track, that’s eleven characters so far. Some of the names associated for each, in terms of voice acting, should be familiar to long time Marvel animation fans too. Cal Dodd as Wolverine is kind of a staple after all.

Here’s the roster as it stands now:

  • Brian Bloom (Captain America, Silver Surfer)
  • Steve Blum (Venom, Beta Ray Bill)
  • Trevor Devall (Rocket Raccoon)
  • Cal Dodd (Wolverine)
  • Josh Keaton (Spider-Man)
  • Matt Mercer (Nova, Annihilus)
  • Aileen Mythen (Phyla-Vell)
  • Elysia Rotaru (She-Hulk)
  • Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm)
  • …and more to come!

As you can see there, there are indeed “more to come”, since there are a slotted 15 characters that’ll appear in the final game. So might we be getting some more X-Men, with Colossus, Gambit, or Cyclops? What about additional Avengers? Iron Man, Thor (maybe even Thunderstrike), or Scarlet Witch would all be awesome.

Then again, there are a ton of heroes not affiliated with the bigger teams, who were huge during Marvel’s 90s era too. And since Dotemu and Tribute Games are focusing on that decade for Marvel Cosmic Invasion, we can’t help but think characters like Ghost Rider, Professor Hulk, members of the New Warriors, or the Fantastic Four would all fit right in.

Whoever might be next, we’ll let you know as soon as announcements are made. As for the full release of Marvel Cosmic Invasion, genre fans can look for that some time later this year, for the PS4, PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC.
