It was a big night for Sega last evening, as the publisher took the wraps off of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and a new Virtua Fighter.
SEGA
If you’re a Sega fan, you’ve got a lot to look forward too. It was about a year ago that the company first announced it’d be heading back into its massive collection of properties to bring some of those classics back for new audiences, with fresh installments. Bandied about were names like Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and more.
Since that day of reveals, we haven’t heard much about the initiative, though we assume it’s still rolling. If you’ve been awaiting patiently, hold on, because last night at The Game Awards we got something kinda/sorta connected.
“SEGA continues to dig into its treasure trove of IP to bring back what our fans have been asking for,” said Shuji Utsumi, President and COO of SEGA Corporation. “This year we are proud to reveal Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, a completely new project in the Virtua Fighter series, and a brand-new concept from RGG Studio that for now we’re calling Project Century. This is in addition to last year’s reveals of Crazy Taxi™, Jet Set Radio™, and more. We will continue to look for opportunities to add to our incredible publishing line-up in the future.”
Sega press release
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds
Shadow the Hedgehog once again takes the center stage in this first look at Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. The trailer didn’t have any actual gameplay (we assume), though it did look pretty slick, and hints at what might be the game’s big hook.
Sega commented on that in the press release, saying that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds “features a distinct racing mechanic that promises to transport Sonic racing fans into a new dimension.” So will we see a world-hopping ability, or something of that ilk built into the game’s tracks?
Stay tuned, and in the meantime, here’s that first look:
Virtua Fighter
Now, this one’s a little more of a mystery than Sonic Racing, since the trailer wasn’t actually a full trailer. Instead, Sega showed off more of a glimpse of what the next Virtua Fighter title will be offerings fans. That came in what looks to be a cinematic, followed by actual gameplay.
From the brief looks of it however, Virtua Fighter could be something special.
Not enough Virtua Fighter for you? Well, if that’s the case, the hit ‘play’ below, for a full Virtua Fighter direct presentation. The show covers the upcoming new game, as well as Virtua Fighter 5, and also serves as a mini- celebration of the 30th year for the property.
