Dormant no longer, the kaiju vs massive mecha tales of Pacific Rim are set to continue with a graphic novel series via Kickstarter.
A comics apocalypse
It’s been a little while since we’ve seen Pacific Rim. The original property made a splash in 2013 when the first movie hit theaters, bringing massive city-destroying monster battles to genre fans. From there, we got one sequel, as well as animation and comics, but the property has been fairly quiet for a while.
Well, you can consider that period over, as Legendary Comics is partnering with Rocketship Entertainment for a trilogy of graphic novels will pick up the story from the films, and take it in some “bold new directions”. Pacific Rim: Final Breach will come to Kickstarter for a series of three books, and will be bringing along some familiar faces with it. The likenesses of Charlie Hunnam (Raleigh), John Boyega (Jake Pentecost), and Charlie Day (Newt) will all be included.
The title will spin out of the creative team of Joshua Fialkov, who’s best-known for Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, and with art by E.J. Su. You might know that name from the likes of Transformers.
Humanity faces its ultimate threat as the Precursors unleash a new wave of devastating Kaiju assaults on Earth in Pacific Rim: Final Breach! After years of failed attempts to enter the Anteverse, the trans-dimensional realm from which all Kaiju emerge, Jake Pentecost and Hermann Gottlieb conceive a daring last-ditch plan whose success hinges on finding legendary Jaeger pilot Raleigh Becket—the only human being to ever survive behind enemy lines. Living in exile off the grid, Raleigh must choose assured annihilation or confront his past and team up with a new generation to pilot the brand-new Gipsy Destroyer, the last Jaeger standing. Tensions escalate and old wounds reopen as the PPDC finally crosses the breach to confront what lies on the other side… It’s time for humanity to meet its true enemy and cancel the apocalypse once and for all.
“When it was declared at the end of the last Pacific Rim movie that we were going to take the war to the invaders, that was a set-up we couldn’t resist bringing to the world of graphic novels. We are delighted to pick up on the canonical threads and tell a new exciting story for fans of the franchise in this 3-book series,” said Robert Napton, SVP, Comics & Publishing at Legendary Entertainment.
