Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice slices through 10 million copies

Sales of Activision and FromSoftware’s 2019 action/adventure Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice have crossed a heady number.

Shadows Die 10 million times

If you were wondering whatever happened with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, wonder no more because the game’s been quite the hit apparently. Publisher Activision announced as much late yesterday, with some impressive sales figures touting its success.

“It has been an honor to partner with FromSoftware for all of these years, and we highly value our shared passion to create incredible worlds that engage our players.”

Josh Taub, Activision’s Chief Operating Officer

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has officially crossed the 10 million unit sell-through mark, and of course as a result, it can pretty safely be called a hit. It’s worth pointing out too, that while it’s taken four years to get to that number, Sekiro wasn’t looked at as a ‘blockbuster’ at launch. While it is a FromSoftware game, the 2019 release didn’t have the studio’s now-expected level of ‘fanfare’ surrounding it.

Maybe that’s due to Sekiro being a bit of a different cut from what FromSoftware usually produces, with a unique setting as a backdrop to its action. Though there were heavy horror and supernatural elements, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was set in 1500’s Japan.

It also had more than one hook to it, that we haven’t seen repeated. For one thing, the ninja Sekiro had only one arm, and had to make use of prosthetics in his adventure. And secondly, he was able to rise from death. Handy trick, that, especially in a FromSoftware game.

Since its launch in 2019, Sekiro has continued to secure its universal acclaim, challenging and engaging players globally in the dark and twisted world of 1500s Sengoku Japan. In the game, players take on the role of Sekiro, the “one-armed wolf,” a disgraced and disfigured warrior rescued from the brink of imminent death. He’ll need an arsenal of deadly prosthetic tools and powerful ninja abilities to exact revenge on his arch-nemesis.
