Star Trek: Klingons will be the latest Trek comic from IDW

A fierce warrior race, The Klingons will be getting their own series from IDW Publishing this February. It all begins, fittingly, with Kahless.

Continuing a legacy

The last few years have been odd ones for most Trek fans. Longtime followers of the sci-fi universe have been treated to a continuing onslaught of new TV and movies. You might think that would be great, but little of what’s been presented has resembled the classic Trek U.

Even the stuff that’s taken place (allegedly) within the original timeline hasn’t looked or acted much like what diehards have come to know. It’s been a massive departure, and one that’s even resulted in the iconic Klingons being completely altered. But with all of that in mind, there might be a little something on the horizon that could restore a little of that former luster, even for the Klingons.

To seek out new life

New from IDW is a set of “extra-long one-shots”. These books will follow the story of Trek’s various alien races, with the first focusing on none other than Kahless. If you don’t know who he was, Kahless was the greatest warrior in Klingon history. He was a kind of godlike figure, complete with a religion that sprung up around him.

The writing team of Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, who you might know from Star Trek: Year Five, will be heading up the book. They’ll be joined by artist Timothy Green II.

“I was, in large part, raised by Star Trek… and no culture helped me come to terms with my masculinity, my anger, and my personal code of honor more than the Klingons,” says Lanzing. “So when I tell you the only thing more exciting to me than taking the Enterprisecrew on their final journey in Star Trek: Year Five is getting to show the man behind the myth of Kahless The Unforgettable, you can believe it.”

“The Klingon people provide a rich counterpoint to the Federation. They present a lifestyle that is loud and fearless, but also incredibly egalitarian and fair; no matter who you are, respect is earned, not given,” says Kelly. “We’ve been pitching this story since before we’d ever been hired to write Star Trek. We never in a million years thought it would be a story we actually got to bring to life. And with an artist of the caliber of Timothy Green II — whose detailed, beautiful work owes so much to the greats of Japanese tradition — this will be a saga worthy of Kahless.”

And new civilizations

As mentioned, after Klingons there’s a fair bit more to come. This is a series of one-shots remember. The Ferengi will be up next, and there are hints that Vulcans and Trill might come later. That by way of editor Heather Antos, who adds:

“There is no Star Trek without the vast population of alien species calling the universe home,” says editor Heather Antos. “From Klingons to Ferengi, Vulcans to Trill and beyond, it’s so exciting to delve deep into what makes each of the species a unique addition to the world of TrekMirrorverse, or otherwise!”

Star Trek: Klingons kicks off the action in February 2022, with both standard and variant covers. The standard will be brought to you by interiors artist Green II, while the variant will come from Alexandra Beguez.
