Wrestling and comics don’t crossover much, but that’s exactly what fans can expect from Over the Ropes. The new series is based in 90s grappling.

There’s no arguing that the 1990s were a tremendous time for professional wrestling. Between the WWF/E, the WCW, and even ECW, the all-around quality of wrestling was top notch.

Mad Cave’s new book is not based directly on any of that, but instead is set in a fictional universe that sounds nonetheless pretty similar. It also doesn’t sound like its fictional federation, the SFW, is one of the larger promotions.

That in and of itself is kind of neat, since it would have been much easier to go for the glitz. As it is, this seems like a much more raw look at what wrestling in a smaller organization might have been like… though with a decidedly fictional edge.

Writer Jay Sandlin and artist Antonello Cosentino collaborate to explore the world of indie wrestling in the golden age of the sport, the 90’s. Over the Ropes is an underdog story of staying true to oneself in a world where ring personas often time bleed into reality. Sandlin and Cosentino craft a tale in which finding one’s true self may mean crafting a larger than life image inside of the ring.
Set in a fictional world, Over the Ropes dives into sports entertainment’s biggest era. A young high-flyer named Jason Lynn goes off-script in a match to win the world title and sets the southern territory on fire as the face-painted wrestler, Phoenix.
