IDW’s newest Transformers title to explore Cybertron before the war

A time really never seen before in any medium, is the golden age of Cybertron. That’s just what the new IDW Transformers comic will focus on.

Peace through tyranny

When you think of the classic Transformers franchise, you pretty much think of giant robots locked in endless war. But thanks to a whole mess of canon, we also know that there was a pretty sizable portion of Cybertronian history that was peaceful. In fact, it was a golden age.

Following on the heels of publisher IDW’s essential capper to the Transformers saga, we get a book that will shift the focus onto that time. We’ll see the Autobots homeworld before it was ravaged by war, though there will be hints of what’s to come.

The series will spring from the minds of writer Brian Ruckley and penciler Angel Hernandez. It’ll showcase the very beginnings of what will become an apocalypse.

Here’s the official synopsis

Will Prowl feature in this murder/mystery?

In this new Transformers comic, IDW will explore Cybertron in ways never seen by audiences before – delving into an idyllic society, peaceful for thousands of years, as it faces the most momentous event in its history: the mysterious end of a single life. Through the eyes of young Bumblebee and his friends, fans will witness conspiracies forming, harmony giving way to conflict, and the very fabric of Cybertronian civilization tearing itself apart.

“Bringing Transformers fans this story is a real privilege,” says Brian Ruckley. “But just as important, it’s an amazing opportunity for new readers to discover and explore one of the biggest universes – and one of the best casts of characters – that science fiction has to offer, and to get in right at the start of a truly epic saga.”

IDW press release

I haven’t read IDW’s Transformers stuff for a while. I was pretty consistent for a while, but I felt like it started getting too off the path. That’s not going to be the case here, as the new series has a definite direction, that being the classic civil war. And as a fan, I have to admit I’m pretty excited about this prequel series. There’s a ton of material to play off of here, and it could be something special.

The first issue will sport multiple cover variants, and is set to land on the racks this March.
