Dazzler returns with a new solo book from Marvel

Classic X-Man Dazzler is back in action in the Marvel U this summer, as she gets a shot at the spotlight from writer Magdalene Visaggio and artist Laura Braga. Her solo book will set the singer/superhero against some baddies, staged against the Brooklyn music scene.

“Dazzler has always been one of my favorite X-Men, and one of the most sadly underutilized,” said Visaggio. “She’s been wandering for so long, and I’m so excited to help bring her back to her musical roots and the X-family. Anyone who knows my work knows how much I love to frontline women who quite literally rock, and I hope me and Laura can bring some of that same energy and positivity to Dazzler.”

I’m a little confused by this new Dazzler series, titled Dazzler: X-Song. For starters, I’ve got to ask if there’s much call for a Dazzler book at all. She’s a cool enough character, with a solid X-history, but she’s seemingly barely been around in Marvel’s Universe and has definitely had little impact in years. So to bust out a new ongoing? I don’t know if that really makes sense. Actually, I don’t even know if this is an ongoing.

There’s no mention of whether or not this is a mini-series or an ongoing series in the press release. It feels like is, but the subtitle and talked-up story seem more like it’s going to be limited in nature. Then there’s the synopsis. Whats with the Inhumans?

It’s all glitter and glamour in the underground punk scene…until Dazzler stumbles upon a part of her world that’s dangerous and violent. Now, it’s up to Dazzler to protect her dedicated Inhuman fans, even if doing so means that she has to turn to her own past for clues and answers.

Maybe I missed something over the last few years, but that strikes me as weird. At least it looks kinda cool. The number one issue (and this is a new #1, with no Legacy numbering) hits stores on June the 6th.
