Witness the history of Prey’s alternate future in new trailer

The TranStar corporation plays an integral role in Bethesda’s new Prey reboot.

An alternate future

It’s a bit odd that developer Arkane would go back tot he ’50s to start Prey’s story. Then again, I’ve always liked when fiction weaves in real-world happenings. I’m kind of a sucker for that stuff. What’s most interesting is how they didn’t keep their alt-world ‘behind the scenes’. Instead Prey makes wholesale changes to the world that we know. Pretty cool.

In the alternate future of Prey, President Kennedy survives the assassination, which sets off a turn of events leading to the central conflict. After recovering from the attempt on his life, Kennedy threw his nation further into the space race by taking control of a U.S./Russian joint program and transforming a Russian satellite into a fully functional R&D facility meant to study non-terrestrials. This facility later became Talos I, a highly advanced space station owned by the TranStar Corporation.

Of aliens and test subjects

So that’s a little something on the backstory behind Prey. And that’s a good thing since the game hasn’t seen a whole lot of news released since it was announced at E3. Still mysterious though, is the case of main character Morgan Yu. He’s a test subject, we know that. But how Morgan got on the Talos 1 space station in the first place is still cloaked in shadow. Likewise as to what kind of enhanced abilities he might have. A few hints as to all of the above are sprinkled through the press release snippet below.

In the few years since TranStar took over, the station has been used as the testing ground for some morally dubious experiments, with people on board serving as subjects – people like Morgan Yu. After awakening on Talos I, Morgan finds the station overrun by a previously contained non-terrestrial entity called Typhon, which the scientists had been studying and using to improve the scope of human abilities. Aided by strange alien-based powers, Morgan must survive the incursion, uncover the mysteries surrounding the Typhon and save humanity from the impending danger aboard the station.

So far, so good. I was a huge fan of the first game, so I had high hopes for a sequel. While this isn’t that (it’s a reboot), it still has a more than enough to pique my interest. You know, even though it’s pretty much a brand new IP. Prey is set for release on the Xbox One, PS4, and the PC some time in 2017.
