System Shock arrives on GOG with Enhanced Edition

An influence on some of the best games of all time, System Shock is a classic title, and now it’s back to unsettle a whole new round of gamers  with the Enhanced Edition.

“With System Shock: Enhanced Edition, we’re implementing game-changing improvements, including mouselook, widescreen, and a high resolution display mode,” says Stephen Kick, CEO of Night Dive Studios. “The classic game has never been more accessible to a modern audience.”

Both an FPS and an RPG in a way, System Shock is one of those games that you think about long after you’re done playing. In that way, it’s very similar to BioShock, though it’s a completely different adventure as you can see from the trailer above. It’s also a game that’s been seen as having an impact of games like Deus Ex, which is pretty obvious just by looking at it in action.

And if you’ve played before, there’s reason to come back and play again on GOG with the Enhanced Edition. Tweaked up by Night Dive Studios, System Shock now has brand new supported resolutions (up to 1024×768), as well as a mouse look mode, a better inventory system, remapped controls, and a bunch of bug fixes. If you’ve never played before, this would be the version to get into.

It’s available right now on GOG.com for $7.99 USD during the intro period (that’s 20% off). You can also grab the whole series (parts one and two) in a pack for 10% off it’s usual price of $19.98, so it’s as good a time to dive in as any.

You’ll also find lots at both the original System Shock and the new re-release below in the gallery, so have a peek and you can see the difference a couple of decades makes.
