IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios’ take on James Bond is almost here. Check out the launch trailer for 007 First Light.
Now pay attention 007
From Hitman developer IO Interactive and Amazon MGM Studios, 007 First Light takes the British super spy back to his beginnings for fresh start. It’s there that players will take control of Bond, guiding him towards becoming the 00 Agent he’s destined to be. And unlike with past adaptations, this one won’t be all action.
Bond can eavesdrop on conversations in the game, and uncover “environmental clues to open new pathways”. He can also pickpocket “vital items”, and make use of his Instinct. That’s set to be its own thing, according to the press release, through which he’ll be able to lure enemies, bluff his way out of tight spots, and “sharpen focus for precision in combat”.
Keeping things stealthy, Bond will also have his trusty Q Branch gadgets. Those will aid with “hacking, lock cutting, distractions, elimination, and quiet takedowns”. Especially for players who want to keep things as quiet as possible, the gadget assortment seems like it should come in handy. Not that stealth is completely necessary all of the time.
Fans will be able to engage with some great-looking fisticuffs, when it comes to more open action. Those seem to play off of the Batman: Arkham system, which would be quite welcome if accurate. But that’s not all. Bond does have a License to Kill remember, and he’ll be able to go guns-blazing if necessary.
In 007 First Light, James Bond (portrayed by Patrick Gibson) steps into the world of espionage after catching MI6’s attention, beating the odds in a precarious situation in Iceland. Bond finds an unexpected advocate in M (Priyanga Burford), who sees his ability to stay in control under pressure and backs his judgment in the field. That confidence is tested by John Greenway (Lennie James), a former 00 agent and the program’s hardline training instructor, whose disciplined, by-the-book philosophy clashes with Bond’s instinctive, improvisational style. When the rogue return of 009 becomes the 00-Programme’s first real test, Bond is set on a journey across the world, pursuing leads from the quiet Carpathian Mountains to the dangerous black market of Aleph, and into the lair of the unpredictable Bawma (Lenny Kravitz).

More than just the campaign
By far, the campaign has gotten the lion’s share of the attention, when it comes to coverage of 007 First Light. That’s understandable, since it’s looking like something that Bond fans might be happy with. But even so, that’s not all there is to this upcoming action title. Along with the story itself, there’s the Tactical Simulation, or TacSim for short.
According to Amazon MGM Studios, that’s a way to replay previously beaten missions. The mode will be set in the game’s MI6 facility, and all for replaying of the first two missions in that mentioned campaign. the official word on it is a little bit confusing, since we’re not sure if missions will open up as they’re played/beaten. But either way, we do know that TacSim will fully open up once the full game has been bested.
It’ll serve up more than just straight-up replaying too. Amazon MGM Studios says that fans will be challenged “with modifiers in scored missions and progression-driven unlocks, encouraging experimentation, mastery, and new ways to approach each scenario.”
