The Thing Remastered surprise drops onto consoles and PC

The horror returns, and comes by way of the surprise arrival of Nightdive Studios‘ horror remastering of The Thing.

The Thing from Another World

John Carpenter‘s 1982 remake of the ’51 classic The Thing from Another World is considered a sci-fi/horror masterpiece by many. Retitled to simply The Thing, the movie upped the ante on the original significantly, both in terms of sheer terror and its over-the-top gore, though it never spawned a series to speak of. There was a prequel in 2011, but that was it.

Fans did get a straight followup before that though, in the form of 2002’s video game of the same name. Instead, the game created a new situation, casting players as the head of a four-man military team sent to the frigid Outpost 31 to find out what happened to the film’s cast. Of course, once those soldiers got there, they found out that there was much more happening than a little snow and ice.

Now hold that thought, and fast-forward to 2024, as the retro masters at Nightdive Studios announced a remastering of that very same game. The new version of the title takes advantage of the company’s KEX Engine, offering interactive-fear at 120fps and 4K resolution.

And if you’ve been eagerly awaiting the arrival of said title, well, today’s your day. Instead of announcing some far off date, the company just decided to surprise-drop the game on fans. Right now.

In the frozen arctic tundra, a mysterious shape-shifting alien has wiped out the crew of the U.S. Outpost #31 research facility. In The Thing: Remastered, players step into the boots of Captain J.F. Blake, the leader of a United States Army Special Forces rescue team sent to investigate the blood-curdling events that transpired in the original The Thing film. Trapped by the elements and at risk of infection by a horrific entity, Blake must keep his squad together to survive by gaining their trust and ensuring that their fear and paranoia don’t get the best of them… or himself.

Nightdive Studios press release

The Thing: Remastered is out right now for the PC, as well as last-gen consoles PS4 and Xbox One, and both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
