The Freelance Police get cosmic in Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered

Coming back once again is the modern adventure game Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse, hitting consoles and PC this summer.

The boys are back

Yes indeed, they’re back once again with a brand new release, picking up the Telltale Games’ original for a fresh remaster. The adventure title that was Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse is the game in question, which will be coming back in remastered form, courtesy of Skunkape Games.

If you recognize the developer’s name, it might be because Skunkape is made up of former Telltale-ers, who picked up the Sam & Max license when that studio shuttered in 2018. And since that time, they’ve been hard at work remastering the fan-favorite titles.

Updates include “updated graphics, lighting, lip-sync, cinematography, and music”. Now, that’s a heck of a list, but might not have seen anything yet, as The Devil’s Playhouse is reportedly the most ambitious one yet.

Max has always been the more unhinged member of the Freelance Police — a lovable lunatic with a knack for spreading chaos wherever he goes. But recently his abilities have taken a supernatural turn.

It all started when he stumbled upon a mysterious toy that allows him to glimpse the future. Now Sam & Max have aroused the attention of a host of villains from across the galaxy who are hellbent on acquiring the magical Toys of Power.

As those who seek the Devil’s Toybox close in and Max’s psychic abilities grow beyond his control, the Freelance Police will come up against their most frightening adversary yet: the power of Max’s mind.

Skunkape Games press release

Along with all of the above, Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered will also bring “new point & click mouse controls, user interface refinements, and accessibility settings”. That’s not it either, as the formerly PS3-exclusive “Nutri-Specs” will come to all versions of the title for the first time.

Fans will be able to get cosmic this August the 14th, when Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse Remastered comes to PC, Switch, and Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
