Nintendo Download: Outlaws to the End

Lots of great stuff has hit the Switch this past week, with more in the days to come, like today’s Red Dead, and Vampire Survivor.

Redux

What’s old is new again, and that’s especially true this week, with the arrival of two absolute classics on Switch. The main difference between the two releases, is that one of those games is an incredibly impressive remaster, and the other is basically a re-release.

The first of course, is the already available Quake II. Originally launched in 1997, as a follow up to the groundbreaking Quake, Q2 was a sea change that set up the franchise as more of an anthology than a series. While Quake was more eldritch-horror, Quake II was sci-fi all the way. Bloody, gore-soaked sci-fi, but still.

Now Nightdive Studios has brought that all-timer back for modern audiences, with a title that refines and improves on the id Software classic, adds in Quake II 64, both original expansion packs, and a whole new adventure from MachineGames. While Quake II is as impressive as remasters get, on the other side of this week’s coin is Red Dead Redemption.

Basically just a re-release and port, Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption was the title that ignited that series, spawning a legion of fans and an award winning sequel/prequel. This is Red Dead as you remember it though, with seemingly no alterations. The game includes the massive base adventure, plus the Undead Nightmare total conversion, which paints the western with a zombified brush. If you’ve never played it, now’s your chance to load up with a version that’s set for action at home or on the go.

With those titles headlining, you might assume there wouldn’t be any other big names this week, but oh you’d be wrong. Also on the docket, along with a monster list of smaller launches, is Vampire Survivors. Crafted in a retro-style, the bullet-hell roguelite tasks player with surviving till dawn, against a horde of hideous beasts. It was a runaway hit on the PC, though it’s definitely a niche title, so make sure you check out the trailer before you buy in.
