Dracula rises in this inside look at The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Adapted from a single chapter of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter puts a new spin on a familiar tale.

Sink your teeth into this

If you’re a vampire fan, then Universal’s new horror film just might offer something actually new for you. That’s especially true for those who’ve never read the original book, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, since the movie is adapted from it. Well, it’s adapted from one single chapter of it anyway, and it’s one that’s really never been deeply explored in any form of media.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter tales the story of Vlad Tepes’ journey from Walachia to England, setting up the classic tale. And as you’ll see in this “A Look Inside” featurette, it’s looking plenty creepy.

Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel DraculaThe Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London.

Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

Universal Pictures press release

The Last Voyage of the Demeter stars Corey Hawkins as a medical doctor who signs on with the crew of the title ship. That’s a group that also includes a pair of Game of Thrones alumni with Aisling Franciosi and Liam Cunningham, and genre favorite, actor David Dastmalchian as the ship’s first mate.

From Universal and DreamWorks Pictures, The Last Voyage of the Demeter premiers in theaters on August 11th, 2023.
