Fresh from a monster of a box office run, which isn’t actually over in some markets, is The Super Mario Bros Movie. Universal Pictures and Illumination’s juggernaut Nintendo animated film cleaned up, with over a billion in global ticket sales and just about as much fan acclaim as possible.
How many times did you go check it out in movie houses? If you’re a lifelong fan of the property, and however many times just wasn’t enough for you, then (as you can see from the headline) we’ve got some good news.
Universal has revealed that the movie is coming home sooner than you might’ve thought. And by that we mean it’s out right now. Well, it’s out digitally anyway, as the physical disc-based release is still a little ways off. But if you’re cool to check out Mario and the Mushroom gang via downloadable/streaming means, you’re set to have a very nice day indeed.
According to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, fans can expect to find The Super Mario Bros Movie for purchase or rental beginning today, May 16th, via “digital platforms nationwide”.
The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the “let’s-a go” attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere. We open with the Super Mario Brothers reckoning with their struggling plumbing business, and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through Mushroom Kingdom. Through their journey, we meet a cast of familiar, lovable characters, ultimately uniting together to defeat the power-hungry villain, Bowser. The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes what millions of gamers worldwide have loved for thirty-five years and levels it up to a new and breathtaking cinematic experience.
