An interesting little announcement made by Deep Silver here, as their upcoming Metro Exodus will be a PC digital exclusive to Epic Games Store.
No digital PC gaming store can rival Valve’s Steam… right? Maybe hold that thought. Deep Silver’s upcoming FPS title will be a digital exclusive to Epic Games’ new online storefront.
Rivals
Epic made some headlines a while ago, launching their own online store. It’s not something that you see every day, since the space is still pretty much controlled by Valve.
Sure GoG is a great shop, and there are others as well, favored by fans to varying degrees. But still, the PC gaming-scape is almost all Valve’s thanks to their excellent, and very consumer friendly, Steam platform. Though cracks have been forming.
Recently there’ve been rumbles throughout the industry about Steam’s cut of profits. It seems as though some publishers aren’t completely happy with it any more.
“Metro Exodus is amazing and is deservedly one of the most anticipated PC titles of 2019,” said Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic. “We are partnering with Deep Silver to launch Metro Exodus, underpinned by Epic’s marketing support and commitment to offering an 88 percent revenue split, enabling game creators to further reinvest in building great games and improving the economics of game stores for everybody.”
Deep Silver press release
“We are delighted to partner with Epic to bring the digital PC version of Metro Exodus to market,” said Dr. Klemens Kundratitz, CEO at Deep Silver. “Epic’s generous revenue terms are a game changer that will allow publishers to invest more into content creation, or pass on savings to the players. By teaming up with Epic we will be able to invest more into the future of Metro and our ongoing partnership with series developer 4A Games, to the benefit of our Metro fans.”
Honoring existing pre-orders
So Epic has an effectively lower cost of posting a game for sale on their service. As a result, they’ve been accruing a pretty nice selection of titles. That includes Deep Silver’s Metro Exodus. Interestingly this is happening at the relative last minute too. Exodus is almost ready to hit retail and already has had a lengthy pre-order period.
So with that, you can be sure there are more than a few pre-orders for Exodus already existing on Steam. What happens to those since the game is no longer on the platform?
The fast answer is, if you have one already, you’re good.
Deep Silver has announced that all existing pre-orders from Steam will be honored. So if you’ve pre-ordered on Valve’s platform, you’re still good to go. Actually, you will among the few gamers who will be playing Metro Exodus from Steam’s launcher. That’s kinda neat.
And before you ask, yes all of Metro Exodus’ DLC will be available via the platform. Again though, that’s if you already had a pre-order.
Metro Exodus will land on both consoles and the Epic Games Store PC on February 15th.
