Ben Templesmith’s The Squidder coming to IDW

Comic creator Templesmith’s 44FLOOD company will start work on a brand new IP for publisher IDW, with the former 30 Days of Night scribe handling the comic from pretty much all angles.

“Ben was there at the start of IDW’s first comic publishing, so it’s great that his return with The Squiddercoincides with our 15th anniversary,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “Although, don’t get me wrong, a new series from Ben is welcome at any time. And thanks to our partnership with Ben’s new venture, 44FLOOD, this just may become a very nice regular occurrence.”

I’m sure there’d be no arguments from readers if that were the case since Templesmith’s work is ranked pretty high in the comic world. Having worked on 30 Days with Steve Niles, the writer/artist also made a name for himself with Singularity 7 and the fan favorite Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse miniseries’. Now he’s coming home to tell a very different kind of story, and one that he’ll be writing, drawing, scripting, lettering, and doing the covers on. I guess that makes the man a quintuple threat then.

The Squidder is equal parts Mad Max, Cthulhu creatures, and everything I love about early 90s Dolph Lungren action films,” said Ben Templesmith. “All of us at 44FLOOD are excited to be working with IDW to bring our projects into comic book shops and book stores. IDW has some of the best and most dedicated people in all of comics.”

So with that kind of a setup, you’ve gotta have more than a few questions as to what exactly The Squidder is. Well, The Squidder (which started life as a Kickstarter project by the way) centers on one of the last remaining soldiers from a long “forgotten” war. Called The Squidder Legions, these soldiers were tasked with defeating the tentacled horrors from beyond that have invaded and laid waste to the world. I’m guessing things didn’t go so well.

In any event, this Squidder has been left behind by history on a post-apocalyptic Earth. That all comes to a close though when he finds a mysterious artifact and teams up with a squid priestess who’s gone full rebel to bring the tentacled overlords to their knees. As far as horror/sci-fi goes, that sounds just about as wildly insane and original as it gets.

No release date for this one yet, but watch for more on The Squidder as we get closer to SDCC and as the year goes on.
